“Cut and paste” photo-collage is a medium that I’ve used over several years. Like many kids of my era growing up in the States, I enjoyed looking through magazines like National Geographic, Look, and LIFE magazines [and other periodicals] that were popular in America circa 1930’s-70s. When concept recording “Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Heart Club Band” album came out [June ’67], I loved the idea of the audio collage and accompanying cover which was a brilliant illustration created from cut and pasting bits of photos.
I began creating simple collages on envelopes and sending them to “pen pals” besides small poster sized ones. Twenty five years later, on my 40th birthday, I took up collaging and was soon doing exhibitions. In the next few years, I also taught photo-collage seminars through University of Oregon, served as art director for Denali [Lane Community Collage art magazine], and created a book of short stories and illustrations [bxw] whilst in Germany [’97-’98].
